About
I hold an Honours Bachelor of Theology from Saint Paul University in Ottawa, Canada. In the coming fall semester I will begin studying for an Master of Letters in Renaissance and Early Modern Studies in the Centre for Early Modern Studies at the University of Aberdeen.
My principle period of interest is Early Modernity, roughly the time of the Renaissance to the Enlightenment, most especially the Post-Reformation era, though relevant precursors to that period are also of interest as they relate to my preferred area of study. My strongest research interest is the question of natural law, particularly as it relates to questions of socio-political ethics, virtue, and the problem of universals in the work of Post-Reformation thinkers such as Francisco Suárez and Hugo Grotius. My longer-term research and publication interests include the turn to constructivism in legal and moral thought in the Post-Reformation and Enlightenment; the influence of Asian philosophies, particularly Confucianism, on Western European, and particularly Jesuit, thought in the Post-Reformation period; the rise of secularism and secularity and its relation to the work of Hugo Grotius; and the publication of a critical edition of the Concordia of Luis de Molina with a complete English translation. Particular thinkers of interest include Luis de Molina, Francisco Suárez, Johann Gerhard, Jacobus Arminius, Hugo Grotius, Adam Smith, and Immanuel Kant.
I am fluent in English and French and have completed German courses to level A1 in the CEFR. I have a working reading knowledge of Biblical Hebrew and Koine Greek and growing exigencies in Latin. I am currently devoting time to the improvement of my German and Latin proficiencies.
